Keep the portal for
A portal is for proof and documents
Balances, performance, statements, tax lots, and the vault. That is custody and reporting work. Athena is not trying to win that row.
Guide for RIAs
Most RIA client experiences are still custodian or suite portals: balances, performance, statements, a vault, and a secure message. Orion’s Client Portal is a clear example of that job, and Orion’s Summit Experience is a richer, often ultra-high-net-worth presentation of the same idea—portfolio, plan, and family data with more polish. A wellness app is a different product. Households open it for cash, debt, credit, Health, and a ranked next step. Athena’s version also takes the paid click from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google, LinkedIn, and YouTube, so the relationship does not start on a form.

Book a demoWhat each is optimized for
If the household only needs a statement and a quarterly chart, a portal is enough. If the book is a long tail of smaller households, they will not log in for a statement, and they will not fill out a form after an ad—that is the wellness-app case. The distinction is not polish; it is whether the product exists for proof at quarter-end or for money life on a Tuesday.
Lean RIAs feel that gap first: the suite portal stays honest for balances, performance, statements, and the vault, while Athena’s firm-branded wellness app carries cash, debt, credit, Health, Athena AI, and the landing place for paid clicks from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Mission Control is the household CRM on the same record, so the advisor is not running a portal login problem and a separate CRM problem at the same time.
| Typical RIA portal | Premium suite layer (Summit and peers) | Athena wellness app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Show holdings, performance, and documents | Present complex wealth and the plan with more polish | Coach money life and keep the household in the firm’s app |
| Who it is built for | Clients who already know to log in at quarter-end | High-complexity and ultra-high-net-worth households | A long tail of households you cannot staff one-to-one |
| What they open it for | A balance, a statement, a vault file | A family view of portfolio, plan, and entities | Cash, debt, credit, Health, and Athena AI |
| Where a paid click goes | Usually a site or a form | Usually a site or a form | Into the app, then retarget if they bounce |
The portal
A typical Schwab, Orion, or Advyzon portal is honest about its job. It is where the household goes when they already have a relationship and need proof: secure message is not a conversation, the vault is not a coach, and performance is not a Health roadmap. Summit raises the ceiling on how that proof looks, especially for complex wealth, and it is still investment- and plan-led presentation rather than daily debt and cash coaching. Athena does not replace the custodian or the books, so a statement portal can stay. What it cannot do is become the app clients open on a Tuesday, or the landing place for those six ad platforms. Balances, performance, statements, tax lots, and the vault stay custody and reporting work; Athena is not trying to win that row.

Capability
| Capability | Typical portal | Premium suite layer | Athena wellness app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balances and performance | Core | Core, often richer presentation | Yes, inside the same app as money life |
| Statements and vault | Core | Core | Not a replacement for books and records |
| Secure message | Yes | Yes | In-app notes plus advice-triggered email |
| Debt, credit, cash coaching | Rare or none | Still investment and plan-led | Health, ranked next steps, Athena AI |
| Client-facing AI in the firm’s voice | Usually none | Advisor-side AI, not household chat | Athena AI, with a path to a person |
| CRM on the same record | Separate CRM in most stacks | Suite CRM, still portal-shaped | Mission Control is the household CRM |
| Ads that land here | No | No | Yes, six platforms, then retarget click-not-funded |
Implementation
The practical stack is Schwab for custody, the suite portal if you already rely on it for statements, and Athena for the household, the CRM, planning, communication, investing policy, and growth. That is the same story as Integrations and the wellness funnel. New households start in the app from an ad or invite instead of a site, form, and phone loop. On a Tuesday they open cash, debt, credit, Health, and Athena AI instead of rarely logging into a portal. The CRM lives in Mission Control on the same household as the app. After a bounce, click-not-funded can be retargeted in the same loop, and you keep the custodian, books, and a statement portal if you need them.
| Decision | Typical portal-only stack | Athena plus custody |
|---|---|---|
| Where new households start | Site, form, phone, then a portal invite | Ad or invite into the wellness app |
| Where they go on a Tuesday | Often nowhere. Portal login is rare | Cash, debt, credit, Health, Athena AI |
| Where the CRM lives | Redtail, Advyzon, or another suite CRM | Mission Control, same household as the app |
| What happens after a bounce | The form and the cookie usually die | Click-not-funded can be retargeted in the same loop |
| What you keep from the old stack | Everything, including the leaky front door | Custodian, books, and a statement portal if you need it |
No. Athena does not replace the custodian or the books and records. Schwab stays the custodial connection. A suite portal can stay for documents if that is already how you deliver them. Mission Control replaces a separate CRM for the Athena book, not the statement vault.
Summit is a premium, firm-branded layer for complex wealth. It is still a presentation of portfolio and plan, not a daily wellness app for cash, debt, credit, and Health, and not the landing place for ads on the six platforms.
This page is the product distinction—portal proof versus wellness habit. The stack bake-off is on Compare. The suite essay is Orion and Advyzon versus Athena. The growth path is From ad to wealth client.
No. Clients and prospects open the wellness app. Advisors open Mission Control as the household CRM for exceptions, messages, leads, and overnight work. Athena is both sides of one platform.
